Award winning engagement photography
Not only has the quality of my wedding photography been recognised with multiple national awards, I am very happy to announce that this month I was awarded a couple of Bronze Bars by The Guild of Photographers for my recent engagement photography.
As always, it’s an honour to achieve such recognition.
I’m sure a lot of attention is turning to the Christmas season, but if you’re looking for a photographer for your wedding next year, please do get in touch early as there is always a rush of activity in the New Year. Hope to hear from you soon!
New sample albums
I’ve been ordering some new sample albums recently and I’m photographing them to show you online. I fear the images don’t do them justice. Click here to see my 10″x10″ Napoli album option. A big heavyweight leather-feel album – I could barely lift it with one hand when the postman dropped it off!
I’m expecting my contemporary 12″x12″ Roma album to appear soon, so photos will go up as soon as possible. It’s by far my most popular album, and couples love the lay-flat double spread look of its pages.
Ask to see them for yourself, I’ll be happy to show them off to you!

Camera Shy
Thumbing through the latest issue of Your Surrey Magazine, I spotted a Q&A article which I thought goes well with my previous blog post.
Q: My fiance and I are both shy people, so we want to spend plenty of time in front of the camera before the big day to get used to being photographed. Can you tell me more about pre-wedding shoots, and how far in advance of the wedding do you suggest we book a session?
A: Denise says – A lot of photographers include pre-wedding shoots within their package, as not only is it a great opportunity to have a look at your chosen venue and select locations to shoot on your wedding day, but it also gives the photographer an insight into how you interact as a couple in front of the camera. Most couples have never had professional photographs taken and don’t really know what to expect, so the pre-wedding shoot helps to put them at ease before their day. It’s also a chance to confirm timings and details and any group photography requirements. I usually suggest a pre-wedding shoot six weeks before the big day as all times and details would usually be finalised at this point. It’s close enough to the wedding day to reconnect with the couple, as in most cases a photographer would not have seen them since the initial booking.
A great answer by Denise. I wanted to add a few things to what she said, without repeating what I have already mentioned in my previous blog post.
I invite couples to an engagement shoot at an early stage, so they can get a feel for how I work and they get to sample my photography first hand. Both important factors when choosing your photographer. I think an engagement shoot helps the couple decide that the photographer is right for them. After all, all photographers work differently.
Following the initial meeting and engagement photoshoot, I will arrange to meet the couple around two months before the wedding to go through the entire day with them. I have a checklist of classic and traditional shots I go through with the couple to see which they require and which they don’t. Often when they see this list, there are many shots that they had overlooked and I am often thanked for how thorough I am. Timings are checked and verified with the couple and slots are assigned through the day to allow for group shots and the romantic shots of the couple. I then send the couple a confirmation letter detailing everything we discussed, listing all the shots they wanted and also those that they don’t.
Some photographers my take a wedding booking and turn-up on the wedding day and start clicking away on their camera, but for me, these meetings are all part of my customer service – I’d hate the couple to overlook a group shot, of say, auntie and uncle who travelled far from abroad, come the wedding day.
Dark and Interesting
As I was thumbing through latest issue of Your London Wedding magazine, the following Q&A caught my eye and I thought I’d post it here. It seems quite apt now that the days get shorter and the clocks have gone back.
Q: We know not to expect glorious sunshine for our November wedding, but I am concerned that our photographs might look dark and dull if all the images are taken outside our stately home venue. How can our photographer get around the dreary conditions?
A: Will says – A professional photographer will be able to produce beautiful images and work with whatever conditions they are presented with, so you certainly shouldn’t worry about dull shots on the big day. There’s almost always an opportunity to venture outside for some photos and often the soft light produced in the winter months can be lovely to work with, giving beautiful atmospheric results. Of course there will be some shots taken inside and if it is a bit too dark, most photographers will use a little flash to give your images the correct light that they require.
I think Will answers this very well, and there really should be no need to worry about these aspects of your wedding. Even more reason to choose a professional photographer you can trust.
Benefits of Engagement Photoshoots
There are plenty of brides and grooms-to-be who cannot wait to get in front of the camera on their special day, but equally, there are many couples who are nervous at the thought of being photographed. If you love being in front of the lens, then an engagement shoot is an ideal opportunity to have some fun before your wedding. On the other hand, if you’re feeling anxious, it can be a good way to help you become more relaxed and get to know the process of wedding photography.
The following is a genuine quote from an email from a bride-to-be who I met with recently for an engagement photoshoot.
“…thanks so much for yesterday, I think we’re both a lot more relaxed in front of a camera now!! The pictures look amazing…”
During the session I give my couples hints and tips on how to pose and to let them know what to expect on the day, so they are fully prepared. In addition to boosting your confidence, you end up with a fabulous set of pictures to treasure and you can even use them to at your reception if you like! Although some photographers charge a premium for such shoots, I offer them as part of my service to you, and it’s completely free of charge. As well as being an integral part of building a relationship with your photographer, it also allows me to see how you react in front of the camera, giving you as much or as little guidance as you require to make you feel comfortable. It also allows you to see how I work behind the camera.
If possible, the photoshoot is also an ideal opportunity to check out your wedding venue, and I often do my photoshoots at the venue itself if possible, so that we can work out between us where the best photo opportunities are. With so many stunning wedding venues throughout the country, a beautiful backdrop is rarely hard to find.
Get in touch today and arrange a free engagement photoshoot. There’s absolutely no obligation to book me as your wedding photographer, but given the percentage of couples who book me for their wedding afterwards, sometimes on the very same day, you probably won’t have to look much further for your photographer…
