We had pretty rainy conditions all day long, but absolutely made the most of it, and everyone had a lovely time.

Afterwards, having delivered Sally her beautiful wedding album, she left me some amazing feedback:

Thank you so much again Jeff for everything you did for us. You really were so lovely and made us feel at ease both before, and during, our wedding... You had a smile on your face throughout the day and we had so many compliments from our guests on how great you were. You made sure all of the photos we requested were taken, despite a few things getting in the way, including the rainy weather. We are so happy with the amazing photos you took and cannot thank you enough! Would highly recommend you!

I hope you can get a feel for their fabulous day from the photos that follow.

Family Photoshoots Available https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/7/family-photoshoots-available I've had some demand recently from previous couples about studio and/or lifestyle photoshoots with their families, at home or on location. In response, I've invested in some quality studio lights and umbrellas and softboxes, and am now able to meet that demand. If you fancy creating some memories with your loved ones, you can read more here and just give me a shout if you want to discuss your requirements.

Website Moving To Secure HTTPS https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/6/website-moving-to-secure-https We will start to transition our website from HTTP to HTTPS in July 2018. This update will include providing and setting up new security certificates and will coincide with Google’s announcement that with their July Chrome browser release, sites not migrated to HTTPS will have a ‘not secure’ message. Currently, according to Built With, only 0.3% of all internet sites have the new certificates (as of June 2018), so Google is pushing harder to drive compliance.

What is HTTPS?

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is an internet communication protocol that protects the integrity and confidentiality of data between the user's computer and the site they are visiting. Adopting HTTPS basically protects a user’s connection to your website because the data sent using HTTPS is secured via Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS), which provides three key layers of protection:

  • Encryption - encrypting the exchanged data to keep it secure from eavesdroppers. So, while the user is browsing a website, nobody can "listen" to their conversations, track their activities across multiple pages, or steal their information.
  • Data integrity - data cannot be modified or corrupted during transfer, intentionally or otherwise, without being detected.
  • Authentication - proves that your users communicate with the intended website. It protects against man-in-the-middle attacks.

Is it safe for clients to be shopping on our website?

Yes, the HTTPS update will cover all webpages but the shopping experience is already HTTPS enabled. Our shopping experience is a completely safe and secure - we protect client information using the latest e-commerce privacy technologies. In fact, you’ll notice when moving from cart to checkout, the URL changes to an HTTPS address.

Before the update is complete, clients may receive "site not secure" warnings when they try to log into their galleries - this will be resolved on completion of the update.

We Are Changing Our Look https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/6/we-are-changing-our-look Rebranding

Becky & PhilBecky & PhilThree Rivers Golf and Country Club, Essex

You may have noticed that the watermarks and branding across the site has been looking a little different. Changes are afoot to establish a simpler and modern design to match what you expect from a leading UK wedding photography brand.

Inspiration

When Jeff Sham Photography was launched, a simple corporate logo was created using a a combination of both a serif typeface font that was elegant yet legible plus a playful handwriting font in a bold orange colour to highlight a creative flair. This laid the foundation and backbone for the brand, and it was what the business was originally built upon.

Today, nearly a decade later, as our photographic style evolves, we wanted to create a timeless, empathetic and expressive feel to the brand going forward that encompasses what our couples demand - simple, beautiful and natural photography.

The old corporate logo was beginning to feel a little dated, and a refresh was required to better fit into the modern age.

Sally and RichardSally and RichardOaks Farm, Shirley

Autograph

Instead of coming-up with a fancy logo or some other generic image that represents a camera, we wanted something to adorn your images and represent the brand that is a little more special.

When an artist finishes a piece of work, they always sign it - a unique and timeless way of identifying the craftsman. Every image we create and deliver, we are proud of, and we want to put our signature to it. So what better way than to create a sleek and elegant autograph, uniquely hand-drawn. In this way, we can happily stamp our name to our images, to sign them and be proud of them.

You will see this new autograph appear throughout our branding and documents, and will serve as our new visual identity.

Colour

The autograph will be in black or white only, elegant and unobtrusive. We want our work to stand-out, so have reduced the colour and noise that you see. The original bright orange highlights have gone, replaced by beautiful subtle tones that is more in-line with the natural feel of our work.

Looking ahead

We hope you love the new modern look. The transition may take some time, but ultimately, we hope you will find an elegant new modern feel about our brand, more consistent with our core values of simple, beautiful and natural photography.

Wedding Photography February Awards https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/4/wedding-photography-february-awards Announcing a clean sweep of awards this month - three entries resulting in three national Bronze Bars. A nod to consistency, and I am happily on track to achieve membership to the coveted Photographers' Bar in the weddings category, which is what I am aiming for this year - membership requires consistent scoring of awards across at least 24 images in a competition year. Fingers crossed! A special thanks to my brides and grooms - definitely can't do it without you all!

If you're still looking for an award winning wedding photographer for 2018 and beyond, do take a look at my work and get in touch and we can have a chat.

New Awards For 2018 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/3/new-awards-for-2018 I like to start the year by entering my images into the Guild of Photographers' competitions to see if my work is still up there in terms of quality and standard. I regularly reach a Bronze Bar level with my images, signifying a strong standard at a national competition level and something to be proud of - roughly speaking this will be of a level that's above the average of what you would expect from a professional photographer. I'm pleased to say that this year, my consistency shows, and I have achieved two more award winning images to add to my collection. Still chasing the elusive Silver Bar, but we all must have something to aspire to!

Wedding Etiquette - how to wear a buttonhole or corsage https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/11/wedding-etiquette---how-to-wear-a-buttonhole-or-corsage This topic is probably the most widely misunderstood or confused from all the weddings that I’ve covered. From my experience, a lot of couples and their bridal parties often are not aware of the traditional wedding etiquette in wearing a buttonhole (for groomsmen) or a corsage (typically for the mothers of bride and groom).

What I have learned is that, traditionally:

  • men should wear their buttonhole with a pin on the outside of the lapel on the left chest, just above the heart. Push the pin through the lapel, back out and through/pierce the stem to fix the buttonhole in place, and then finally back through the lapel, so the sharp point is safely tucked behind the lapel.
  • do not make the mistake of pushing the stem through the actual button hole of the jacket at near neck height!
  • corsages for the ladies are traditionally worn differently, and are typically for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom (and grandmothers). If you have a chest-worn corsage, use a pin and affix to the chest on the right side, and upside down - stem upwards, flower pointing downwards.

Of course there are always variations to these traditions. For example, if men have military medals, these go on the left chest and the buttonhole would then be worn on the right; I've also been to a lot of weddings where the corsage was worn by the ladies the "right way up" - as long as everyone matches, I guess it doesn't matter too much!

At the end of the day though, it's your wedding, and you should do as you please - treat this as a general guide.

Please Don't Make This Mistake https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/10/please-dont-make-this-mistake I got an email from a gentleman who got married earlier this year. He made the mistake of not using a professional wedding photographer for his special day, which was a decision that, by his admittance, he now regrets. It was the same reason that I've heard time and time again - "we had a family member take a lot of pictures" - of which I've never heard of a positive outcome!

The purpose of his message was to see if I could post-process his "stack of pictures from many different sources" to see if we can "salvage something" out of them. Having got some sample images from him to see the scope of work involved, I was shocked to see the multiple sources were actually camera phones, budget and mid-range DSLRs with economy lenses! Even just one of my lenses alone probably costs the same as the total of the kit used. I was really disappointed for him. Sure, you can get some great images no matter the equipment used, but the composition, posing and lighting in these images were less than flattering, to be kind. Some of the images were not even in focus!

This is a story that is becoming more prevalent - as camera prices fall, more and more people have access to better kit, which was previously too costly. However, please ask yourself whether having a decent camera is enough to entrust someone to photograph your wedding day - that once in a lifetime moment.

Don't make this mistake.

One More National Award Winning Image - It's Not Easy https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/5/one-more-national-award-winning-image-its-not-easy No competitions since the start of the year, so I entered last month, with what I thought was a good chance of a getting a solid high award and possibly even a Silver. Funnily enough, the image that I thought would score well was not awarded at national competition level - it just goes to show how tough these competitions are! Here is the image from Claire and Jan's wedding at Grims Dyke Hotel that I thought had a very good chance of doing well - it remains one of my favourite bridal images. It was classified, meaning "images of a standard worthy of acknowledgement relevant to the genre entered but which are not deemed award winning at national competition level".

Claire and JanClaire and JanGrims Dyke Hotel, Harrow

Happily though, another image that I knew would do well, I think due in large part due to the couple's beautiful expressions, scored me an award at national Bronze level, "images of a strong standard at a national competition level (something to be proud of)". You can feel the love in this image. Thank you to Claire and Jan for being so amazing to photograph!

The Real Cost of Wedding Photography https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/5/the-real-cost-of-wedding-photography A new article has been published by Your Perfect Wedding Photographer where they looked at the cost of wedding photography, detailing a survey of 2016. The article also includes tips on how much to budgeting and pricing, money saving tips, as well as breaking down the real cost of wedding photography.

Interesting points to note on wedding photography pricing:

  • Average cost of wedding photography in the UK in 2016 is £1450
  • There was a very slight drop from 2015, where the figure was £1520
  • London is the most expensive where the average cost is £2000
  • The South West and South East came second and third
  • The East Midlands came in cheapest with an average of £1240

Morden Hall Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photographer - Emily and Grant https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/morden-hall-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photographer-emily-and-grant Last year I photographed Emily and Grant's wedding at then newly renovated Morden Hall. I believe it was one of the first weddings to be held there since they reopened. It's such a beautiful venue, set within 125 acres of National Trust parkland, with lovely gardens and a stylish interior spaces. It was a shame that we had a rainy day and didn't get to make the absolute most of what the 18th Century country house had to offer, but everyone still had a brilliant day, as I hope you can see from the photos below.

Happy Sunday https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/happy-sunday I met with one of my couples today for a coffee and to hand over their wedding album. They told me that they were delighted with their images and they looked positively ecstatic with their album too. As we were sipping our coffees and carefully thumbing through the pages, a lady who was sat at an adjacent table got up to leave, and as she was putting her jacket on, she took the time to lean over to us and complimented me on my photography, having seen some of my work across the tables. It's always nice to receive such nice comments from strangers!

Of course my main concern to to make my couples happy, and I'm pretty sure Frances and Rich were very happy indeed. They scored me 10/10 in every category on their feedback form! Many congratulations again to you both, and I hope you have an amazing belated honeymoon.

More Awards for 2017 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/more-awards-for-2017 After a break of over two years from competing, I thought I would start 2017 by submitting some of my images for competition, to see if my work still compares well against the very best of my peers on a national level. I'm pleased to say that all three of my entries were each awarded a Bronze Bar, signifying a strong standard at national competition level which is difficult to achieve and is something to be proud of. So here I present to you my very latest award-winning images; thank you to all my lovely brides and grooms for making this possible!
