After a what seems like a year coronavirus lockdown, I'm pleased to be photographing my first wedding of 2021 back at the lovely Leatherhead Register Office. I've worked here a few times in the past and the gorgeous grounds makes for stunning wedding photography. The state room is wonderfully furnished, with an adjoining conservatory useful for bad-weather photography. Steps from the terrace lead to the lawn and walkways in the large grounds, providing a beautiful backdrop for your wedding day memories.

Statement Regarding Weddings in England in Step 2 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2021/3/statement-regarding-weddings-in-england-in-step-2

News broke today, 16th March 2021, with regards to weddings and receptions in step 2 of the government's lockdown roadmap. It appears that it has been confirmed that:

"...weddings and receptions are only permitted for 15 guests between 12th April and 16th May in places of worship, public buildings, locations and outdoor settings that are already permitted to open. This does not include the vast majority of England’s licensed wedding venues..."

This is a major blow to the estimated 7000 weddings planned before 17th May. As some news sites are reporting, one can "technically get married in a zoo [from 12th April], but not in a Covid-safe, purpose-built wedding venue".

You can read the full statement from the UK Weddings Taskforce.

It seems that with businesses allowed to re-open from 12th April, weddings have an explicit exemption in the step 2 re-opening plans. The Taskforce is due to meet with officials on Wednesday to seek an explanation.

Coronavirus Roadmap - Key Dates and What It Means For Your Wedding https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2021/3/coronavirus-roadmap-key-dates-and-what-it-means-for-your-wedding

On February 22nd 2021, the government announced four steps to easing the coronavirus lockdown affecting different parts of society and the economy, with Boris Johnson stating that there will be a minimum of five weeks between each step, to allow for the gathering and analysis of data before the next step. The ultimate goal is to remove social restrictions on 21st June 2021. Couples have been provided with some much-needed confidence and positivity following the announcement.

Key dates and notes regarding weddings, from:

  • 8th March - wedding ceremonies can take place in exceptional circumstances only, with 6 attendees

  • 29th March - weddings ceremonies can take place with 6 attendees

  • 12th April - weddings and receptions permitted with up to 15 guests

  • 17th May - weddings and receptions permitted with up to 30 guests

  • 21st June - restrictions on weddings will be abolished

As per government guidance, these are the earliest possible dates, subject to tests and the four conditions at each phase. Official documentation can be viewed from the government website.

Despite everything, demand for weddings remains very high and given that we now have dates to work towards it is definitely a step in the right direction. With this green light, wedding industry experts are predicting a sharp rise in enquiries to venues and suppliers, and a boom in weddings is expected to follow.

After securing your wedding date and venue, you should be contacting your first choice suppliers quickly. If you haven’t booked your wedding photographer yet, as your award-winning and Top Ten Wedding Photographer of the Year 2018, I would love to chat with you about your wedding plans and you find out how I can help make your wedding day a success and capture those beautiful memories for you. In 2021, I celebrate an important milestone - a 10 years anniversary in wedding photography. Experienced, passionate and dedicated, you won't find a harder-working wedding photographer!

I am also very pleased to announce our coronavirus guarantee whereby couples can book in confidence - should your wedding be cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus, a full refund will be issued on your deposit.

For a much more detailed and excellent coverage on how these four steps affect weddings, you can read the article at Guides For Brides. Their current coronavirus news on weddings is also worth a look and constantly kept up to date.

Wedding Photographer's Editing Workspace https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2021/2/wedding-photographers-editing-workspace I was inspired by a piece on Your Perfect Wedding Photographer about wedding photographers' office desk spaces. What they say is absolutely true: "Wedding photographers may take photos, but they actually spend most of their time at their desk!"

So I thought I would share my workspace with you and walk you around my current work space and desk set-up for a behind the scenes insight into the hardware and software I use when in my office.

Photo taken with ultra wide lens on Apple iPhone 12 Pro.

Hardware

For my 10th year anniversary in business, I upgraded my Apple MacBook Pro to a state-of-the-art Apple Mac Mini M1, which you can just about see hidden under the monitor on the left. It's a very powerful machine and makes photo editing a very smooth process.

My monitors were also an upgrade from Dell 2K Ultrasharp monitors to LG 27UL600-W 4K LED monitors - the super high resolution means I can edit photos are near full magnification, which means I can see and work on every detail. The monitors are also very colour accurate, and they are further regularly calibrated by a Spyder 5 Elite device (not pictured) - this means your wedding photos will be true to the colours that you remember from your wedding day.

I also use an Apple iPad Pro 12.9" which allows me to go through the thousands of images from a wedding quickly and easily wherever I am, creating a shortlist of images that are then processed on the desktop Mac Mini. It's also used for video conferencing with my couples. The extra large screen compared to regular iPads is a real benefit.

I use a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet for photo editing - using pen is just easier and more accurate than a mouse. Under the desk-riser on the left are a series of backup Seagate hard drives (not pictured), which stores my archive of RAW and final images. As storage space allows, I typically keep an archive of 5 years worth of RAW images; and all final images are kept on my drives and also online. Between my monitors is a tiny Samsung T5 SSD drive which is lightning fast and allows me to work on multiple weddings during busy summers when my computer hard drive is near capacity.

Off-camera, I use a large-format Canon Pro-10S printer to produce professional quality prints - it creates stunning detailed photos with its 10x pigment inks, but with that, it does take-up most of the space along my left-hand wall! I also use a Canon MG-6250 printer for every office day jobs.

Software

My main photo editing tool is the Adobe suite - Lightroom Classic and Photoshop CC. I photograph only in RAW, so each of your final images will have been through some level of post-processing. To be honest, Lightroom is so advanced these days, I rarely need to dip into Photoshop save for exceptional circumstances. That Lightroom runs on my iPad Pro as well, just makes my whole workflow a breeze.

For admin, I use Light Blue, which is an essential tool to manage my weddings and photoshoots, so you will get an occasional email from Light Blue (contracts, forms, invoices, etc). I wouldn't be able to run my business without this essential software. I mainly use Apple Pages and Apple Numbers for most of my admin, documents and brochures these days, but I also use Microsoft Word for very specific tasks.

My website and client galleries are handled by the Zenfolio platform, which I have used and trusted for many years.

Other bits

You'll also notice I'm a bit of a Harry Potter fan, and if you look closely you might spot a few toys that I stole from my newborn son! The mini clock between my monitors reminds me to balance my work and family life, especially important when you are self-employed and it's not an every day 9-to-5 and you have a baby to entertain!

First Testimonials from Pandemic Weddings https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2021/1/first-testimonials--from-pandemic-weddings The year 2020 was a tough year for us all, and weddings were hit particularly hard, what with lockdown and restrictions on numbers. The entire wedding industry has been in upheaval, and venues and supplies have felt the full effect of the coronavirus pandemic. I usually photograph around 25 weddings per year on average - last year, I photographed just six. One of my brides Ashley has kindly returned a survey that I offer to all of my couples, and here is their report card that I was able to generate from it.

Elsewhere, Joanna had the following to say on my Facebook page, following her pandemic-restricted wedding in July:

"Jeff did an amazing job both capturing our day, and helping us both feel confident and at ease. He was really helpful both before and after the wedding too, particularly with helping us put a lovely album together. We are so grateful for our amazing photos, especially given the short notice nature of our booking! Would very highly recommend!"

And briefly, from the only pre-pandemic wedding I photographed in March 2020 before the vast majority of my weddings were then postponed, Katy sent me a short message following her wedding:

"Thank you so so much for everything you did for us on Friday! You were absolutely amazing and we really can’t thank you enough."

Yateley Wedding Photography - Vicky and Dean - Hampshire Wedding Photographer https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2021/1/yateley-wedding-photography-vicky-and-dean-hampshire-wedding-photographer At the end of October during government restrictions amidst the global coronavirus pandemic, I had the pleasure of photographing Vicky and Dean's wedding for them. This wedding had faced multiple challenges as official rules and guidelines kept changing, but we were able to plan through it, and although it wasn't the ideal wedding that the couple would have hoped for, everyone still had a really lovely day, as I hope the photos will show - albeit only 15 persons as per prevailing restrictions at the time.

Vicky very kindly filled-out a "real weddings" form for me, and I'm delighted to be able to present her wedding day to you. The couple originally met through mutual friends in the pub - when asked about their first impressions of each other, Vicky said that her exact thoughts were that he was "dishy" and his response was just simply, "wow".

Dean proposed to Vicky while on holiday in the Lake District, atop 'The Lion and The Lamb' mountain and they were engaged for two and half years. They wanted a rustic wedding in a barn, with a separate space for both the ceremony and reception. The Rivervale Barn, Yateley was perfect for them, a beautiful and unique, award-winning wedding barn in Hampshire - other barns they saw had only one room which needed a 'turn-around' during the reception.

The ceremony was simple and stylish, and all about the love. The bride wore a gorgeous lacy mermaid/fishtail dress from Wed2B with sparkly shoes from Nine West, and her bridesmaids were her sisters and her oldest and closest friend (who wore dresses from Boohoo); the groomsmen were the Dean's best friends (suits from Menswear.com and Next).

Vicky's favourite part of the day was getting married! Their first dance was to My Own Fault by Manny Walters, and Vicky's top tip to other brides and grooms:

"Take time throughout the wedding just to watch it happening as it goes by so quickly."

I hope you enjoy looking through Vicky and Dean's wedding photos as much as we all had fun taking them.

Coronavirus Tier 4 and What It Means For Weddings https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/12/coronavirus-tier-4-and-what-it-means-for-weddings

As of 19th December 2020, the Prime Minister has announced that some areas of the South East, East of England and London will now be in Tier 4 from Sunday 20th December. According to guidance published on gov.uk, "weddings and civil partnership ceremonies should not take place except in exceptional circumstances."

The full guidance pertaining to weddings in Tier 4 areas reads as follows:

"Weddings, civil partnership ceremonies and funerals must only take place in COVID-19 secure venues or in public outdoor spaces unless in exceptional circumstances.

Weddings and civil partnership ceremonies should not take place except in exceptional circumstances, for example where one of those getting married is seriously ill and not expected to recover ('deathbed wedding') or due to undergo debilitating treatment or life-changing surgery. These weddings are limited to 6 people.

If you live in a tier 4 area and are going to a wedding, funeral or linked commemorative event outside the tier 4 area, the event must follow the tier 4 gathering limits on the events.

If you live outside a tier 4 area and are going to a a wedding, funeral or linked commemorative even inside the tier 4 area, you must comply with the tier 4 gathering limits on the events."

Jeff Sham Photography is based in Surrey and as such we are subject to Tier 4 restrictions. At the time of writing, we interpret the official guidance on going to work such that we can continue to travel for work and thus attend and photograph your wedding if you are in Tiers 1-3. Should you have any queries, please get in touch and we can discuss further.

Up to 15 people are able to attend a wedding in Tiers 1-3 in England, but weddings in Tier 3 will not be allowed to have a reception following the ceremony. See the following infographic for a summary.

Celebrating 10 Years in Business https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/12/celebrating-10-years-in-business The year 2021 marks a special milestone for Jeff Sham Photography. Not only will we finally be free of a horrid coronavirus hit 2020, but we will also be celebrating a 10 year anniversary in business - that’s a decade of wedding photography, since our very first one back in 2011.

It’s a very important milestone for any business. Only one half of any start-up businesses survive more than 5 years, and only one third makes it to 10 years. Not only that, with the global pandemic last year, we will lose a lot of photography businesses, and some will use the virus lockdown as an excuse to close doors.

Since establishing the business 10 years ago, we are very proud to have collected a number of prestigious industry awards, and nearly 200 weddings later, we continue to strive to delight couples with beautiful photography that they will treasure. The feedback and reviews we have received over the years is testament to the hard work that we put in to each and every wedding.

Experienced, professional and dedicated, you will not find a more passionate and hard-working wedding photographer to capture your day for you! View our wedding portfolio and get in touch to discuss your requirements and check availability for your wedding date. We look forward to hearing from you!

Mini Photoshoot Sessions Available - Ideal for Christmas https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/11/mini-photoshoot-sessions-available-ideal-for-christmas With Lockdown 2.0 ending and new rules announced and clarified yesterday for the winter, we are happy to announce that we are now able to resume photoshoots from December 3, 2020, just in time for the Christmas season.

Mini sessions were super popular over the lockdown of 2020, so we have decided to extend this into the winter season, allowing families to take part in short and safe photoshoot sessions to get some amazing portraits of loved ones over the festive period.

If you'd like some beautiful family portraits (Christmas photoshoot theme optional!), get in touch to enquire and check for availability. As there are just 3 available weeks in December before Christmas, we encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment.

Post-Lockdown Coronavirus Wedding https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/10/post-lockdown-coronavirus-wedding I’m really happy that weddings are still going ahead, albeit with restrictions that are constantly evolving. I completed another COVID-safe wedding at the weekend, and again, these smaller intimate weddings are so lovely, and everyone had a great time. Social distancing was in-place through the ceremony, as well as masks and other measures designed to keep everyone safe, but they didn’t detract from a beautiful ceremony and wonderful day.

If you’re planning a wedding before the end of the year, please do get in touch and check for availability and have a chat about your plans; it would be an absolute pleasure to capture your memories for you.

Here’s a “fake selfie” that I captured for the couple outside Kingston Register Office by the famous Coronation Stone.

Coronavirus - Can Weddings and Civil Partnerships Go Ahead in the UK? https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/9/coronavirus-can-weddings-and-civil-partnerships-go-ahead-in-the-uk

With the ongoing coronavirus situation forcing regular reviews and changes to regulations by the government, Guides for Brides have published a summary of all the current regulations and guidance for weddings in the UK. They have highlighted differences between each nation and the latest update is always posted near the top and dated and the article is regularly being updated as the latest news comes in.

Of particular note, according to the official government document relating to the new limit of 15 people at a wedding, Coronavirus outbreak FAQs: what you can and can't do, dated 22 September 2020, it has been confirmed that “anyone working is not counted as part of the limit”.

2.9 Can weddings and civil partnership ceremonies go ahead?
Wedding and civil partnership ceremonies and receptions must only take place in COVID-19 Secure venues or in public outdoor spaces. From 28 September, weddings, civil partnership ceremonies and wedding receptions are restricted to 15 people. Receptions must be sit down meals. Anyone working is not counted as part of the limit.

Within these larger gatherings, people do not need to limit their interaction to groups of 6, but social distancing should still be followed between people not in the same household or support bubble.

This is significant given the new limit of 15 people at a wedding, down from 30 people, and from my interpretation, this will not include your photographer or other suppliers considered to be working - this has been a concern with some of my couples looking to plan their now smaller wedding. Also of note, the so-called “rule of 6” need not apply at these larger gatherings.

Family Photoshoots, Baby Photography, Portraits, Lifestyle Photoshoots, Couple Photoshoots https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/9/family-photoshoots-baby-photography-portraits-lifestyle-photoshoots-couple-photoshoots Or - what I’ve been up to over the past summer months, when a wedding photographer has no weddings to photograph!

With August being a traditionally super-busy month for weddings, this year I’ve found some time that I wouldn’t normally have, given the coronavirus pandemic and government lockdown and general bans on weddings. So what have I been up to? I’ve been trying to stay creative behind the camera, and have spent time meeting previous couples, new couples, new families, photographing portraits, and have even done some property photography for a national estate agent.

I always love catching-up with my old couples. I’ve photographed a couple for their anniversary and I’ve met new babies and was referred to their antenatal group new families too, so that has been really lovely. I’ve met new people around my local area doing mini lockdown doorstep photoshoots, an opportunity to meet locals that I wouldn’t usually be able to. My passion is photographing people, so I’m thankful that I’ve managed to spend some time photographing some portraits. And finally I’ve been involved with a national online estate agent to take photographs of their properties around my area.

With weddings restarting, I’ve even photographed two weddings in recent weeks, and have been consulting and meeting with new couples for their weddings both later this year and into next year.

If you’re planning a wedding, do get in touch and we can have a chat about your plans and photography requirements - I’ve really missed photographing weddings this summer, and can’t wait to get back into the swing of it very soon!

Pink Wedding Dress Photoshoot with Jessica in Horsham https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/8/pink-wedding-dress-photoshoot-with-jessica-in-horsham So with weddings in short supply at the moment given government rules around the coronavirus, I did a little “bridal” photoshoot with the lovely Jessica who had a bright pink bridal dress that she wanted to model in. We met in some gorgeous woodland in Horsham and created some stylised images with her dress and captured some beautiful portraits. Here are some photos from a fun afternoon out shooting. I wonder if I’ll ever get an actual bride in a pink wedding dress on her big day?

They were married at the Guildford Baptist Church under social distancing restrictions but everyone had a great day, and the couple were smiling all day long. It was my first wedding since the country was put under lockdown in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, and I’ve really missed the buzz and energy of a wedding day - honoured to have covered the day for this lovely couple.

Lockdown Wedding in Guildford, Surrey https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/7/lockdown-wedding-in-guildford-surrey I just completed post-processing of my first wedding since the coronavirus pandemic hit us in March. My last wedding was on the night before lockdown happened across the country, and I've really missed photographing these joyous occasions on a summer's day. So what was it like? It was different in places, but it was still such a lovely day, and crucially, undeniably a wedding day. The couple was really lovely, the guests were really friendly, and I believe we all had a genuinely brilliant day despite social distancing and everything else.

The number of guests were legally capped at 30, so it was a smaller wedding. Guests at the church were sat at a Covid-safe distance. And singing was not permitted. But apart from that, it was a normal church wedding! We conducted some family and friends photography after the ceremony in the glorious sunshine, and then I took the couple away for a little photoshoot in the Surrey countryside fields near their home. Honestly, it was a lovely day, and I was so happy for the couple who didn't stop smiling all day long. Don't let the coronavirus spoil your day - you can still make your wedding a very special event!

Photos to follow!

10 Favourite Recent Summer Wedding Photos https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/7/10-favourite-recent-summer-wedding-photos This weekend will see only my second wedding of the year and the first of the summer. My wedding season had only just begun in March when it was brutally cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. With things easing, I’m excited that I’ll be photographing my first post-lockdown wedding on Saturday. To mark the occasion, I thought I would take the opportunity to showcase a selection of ten of my favourite summer wedding images from the recent past, from all across the country - they might not be the most technically proficient images, but they bring me a lot of happy memories. Here’s to more days like these!

Coronavirus: What are the rules on weddings? As of 23 June 2020 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/6/coronavirus-what-are-the-rules-on-weddings-as-of-23-june-2020

As of the official Government update on June 23rd, lockdown in England is to be relaxed and the 2m rule is to be eased. Changes announced will take place from July 4th. Amongst those changes announced:

  • ...weddings will be allowed to have 30 attendees... (source: BBC)

Social distancing measures will still be in place. The BBC have also published a guide detailing the rules on weddings which is well worth a read. Around 250,000 weddings take place a year across the UK so this is very welcome news to couples planning their wedding, and wedding suppliers and the industry on the whole - the industry adds an estimated £10bn a year to the economy. Weddings have been banned in nearly all circumstances since lockdown began on March 23rd.

Reigate Hill Golf Wedding Photography - Kim and George - Surrey Wedding Photographer https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/6/reigate-hill-golf-wedding-photography-kim-and-george-surrey-wedding-photographer A look back at Kim and George's wedding in February 2019 at Reigate Hill Golf Club. I've worked at this beautiful countryside wedding venue a few times before and it's always a pleasure going back to photograph a wedding day. I started the day with the bride at the couple's home, photographing the bridal preps before heading over to meet the groom and the boys, photographing the arrivals while we await the bride. After a lovely wedding ceremony, we had some time to pose with the couple's unique vintage wedding vehicles of a police car and fire engine, as they both work for the emergency services. We followed with some group family photos as the rain started to fall, before retiring indoors for dinner, speeches, and the first dance. There was even time for an evening photoshoot with the couple around the scenic club grounds.

Two new wedding photography awards https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/5/two-new-wedding-photography-awards After being awarded Top Ten Wedding Photographer of the Year 2018 and in the same year being inducted to The Guild’s Photographers Bar for consistently outstanding work, I took a break from competition, satisfied with my achievements. With the current pandemic and all weddings currently off, I decided to use my time to once again submit my work and see how I fare against the very best photographers. So I’m pleased to announce two new Bronze Bar awards for my wedding photography! As an aside, my third entry was disappointingly “Classified” only, missing out on an award at national competition level - it was a strong image in my opinion (or else I would not have entered it), so it just goes to show it’s not that easy to get awarded!

Featured in Pure Documentary Wedding Photography Collection https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/5/featured-in-pure-documentary-wedding-photography-collection I am delighted to announce that I was once more featured by Your Perfect Wedding Photographer in their monthly wedding photo award and collections. They feature and round up collections of stunning wedding photography for their monthly awards, where they feature beautiful, creative and amazing shots from fearless wedding photographers.

Their latest collection is entitled Pure Documentary, and one of my wedding images was selected to feature. It was taken at Samantha and Simon's wedding in June 2019 over at The Swan Hotel, in Wells, Somerset, which is a bit of a destination for me, being based in Surrey - however it's always an honour to be booked for such a destination wedding and a huge compliment when couples book based on photography and service, regardless of geography. It was a delightful wedding, with a fun-loving couple on a beautiful hot summer's day under the shadow of the glorious Wells Cathedral, and one that I was proud to be part of.

Presenting my featured image:

Coronavirus Statement https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/4/coronavirus-statement

A message from Jeff on the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic

I hope you and your family are all keeping well and safe in these difficult times. On that topic of weddings, couples book me to photograph their important day not only because they love my style and my work, but also for my professionalism and client care. This is evident from the feedback and reviews that you can read for yourself. It is on that note that I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to accommodate you and your wedding - I am a small “family-run” business rather than a large faceless corporate entity, so have faith that you will have my full personal attention.

Established in 2011, my wedding photography business is my full time job, profession, and livelihood - my sole source of income to support me and my family. Approaching 10 years in business, I take it very seriously, and I have seen my fair share of struggles and uncertainty, but this is truly unprecedented times. This year will be very tough for my business, with my income wiped-out for the foreseeable future, and it will be a real test. But my passion for wedding photography and determination for success will to see this through, along with your help and support. Demand for venues and suppliers is expected increase significantly in the second half of 2020 and throughout 2021, so it is very important that secure your first choice suppliers soon, and at least make initial contact during the lockdown period. There are already reports that some venues are finding it increasingly difficult to reschedule weddings due to existing bookings next year, let alone booking new weddings.

As we are all in this together, there is nothing we can do about the current situation but to follow government guidelines, and make our plans around official advice. At the time of writing, I’ve had all of my spring time weddings postponed to a later date, without any penalty to my couples. As the lockdown continues, I will be monitoring the situation and talking to my summer couples accordingly.

The business and our contract

I will absolutely be there on your wedding day as planned unless official restrictions does not allow. The business is still "open" and I am taking enquiries for weddings for later this year, next year and beyond - please do get in touch to check my availability for your wedding date and for an initial consultation.

To help couples with their weddings this year, a permanent 15% discount will be applied to new bookings for remainder 2020 dates. Prices for 2021 and beyond are currently under review to protect the business going forward - this will not affect existing bookings.

To build confidence in you and your guests, I am actively following official guidelines, such as social distancing and washing hands regularly, to avoid infection.

Should I show symptoms pertaining to COVID-19 at the time of your wedding, I will have to self-isolate and will be unable to attend your big day. You will be notified at the earliest opportunity and I will do my best to work with you to find a suitable replacement from my network of professional photographers, as per the substitution policy in Section 14 of our contract. Otherwise, payments will be returned as per Section 4.1 of our contract.

If you have to cancel or postpone your wedding, please firstly contact your wedding insurers for advice. If you need to postpone your wedding, I will work with you to accommodate your new date. If you need to cancel your wedding for reasons related to the coronavirus, your contract will be cancelled as per the force majeure policy in Section 12 of our contract and I will issue a full refund; for any other reason, the cancellation policy applies, as per Section 4 of our contract.

Our contract can be viewed here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. As I have already said, we are in this together, and I would hope that at the end of the day, common sense will prevail and an amicable (and the right) solution will arise out of any issues.

Take care and stay safe. Jeff.

Coronavirus - Advice for couples with Summer 2020 weddings https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/4/coronavirus-advice-for-couples-with-summer-2020-weddings Guides for Brides has very usefully published a new up-to-date article with advice for couples about the coronavirus Covid-19 and summer 2020 weddings.

The government’s lockdown, which has now been extended to at least the 7th of May, prevents weddings from taking place. All weddings during this period have to be cancelled or postponed.

Many venues have already chosen to close up to the end of May or June, regardless of whether the lockdown is lifted before then. This decision was taken in response to couples who were understandably concerned that they might not be able to have their church wedding, civil ceremony or civil partnership as planned.

It is important to note that it isn’t in the venues’ interests to postpone weddings. Venues would prefer that events go ahead as planned. However, the overwhelming feeling from the wedding industry was that allowing couples to postpone May and June weddings, which will likely be affected by social distancing, was the right thing to do. If you are in this situation and you and your partner have wedding insurance, this may enable you to claim on your insurance.

If your wedding is still due to be going ahead and you are anxious about it, we would advise that you discuss your options with your venue. Social distancing may mean that you need to reduce guest numbers or you might prefer to voluntary postpone to an alternative date.

I will be in touch with my couples as and when appropriate as wedding dates approach and government guidelines change.

Wedding Photography Discount Due To Coronavirus COVID-19 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/3/wedding-photography-discount-due-to-coronavirus-covid-19

The UK in lockdown has meant there will no longer be social gathering in the country for the foreseeable future. Weddings that have been planned for many months are being cancelled and postponed. As of March 23rd, no weddings are to take place over the next 3 weeks and no social gatherings of more than 2 people. Although it will be reviewed in April, it seems unlikely that weddings and social gatherings will be reinstated for some time.

My weddings up until end of May have all been postponed to a later date. I’ll be monitoring the situation closely to see how my weddings later this year might be affected, and I’ll be in touch with my couples as appropriate.

It’s a particularly difficult time for many of us in the wedding industry, for wedding venues that have had to close, and suppliers and photographers who have seen their livelihoods, careers and only source of income wiped-out for the foreseeable future. A lot of couples and those planning weddings may no doubt have their own financial difficulties coming out of this pandemic as we all face an economic downturn, forecasted to be worse than the financial crisis of 2008.

To do my bit to help couples and to try to stimulate and boost weddings and bookings, I’ve made the decision to offer 15% off all wedding selections for new bookings for weddings in the rest of 2020. This offer cannot be combined with any other offer, and is subject to availability on your wedding date. This offer may also be withdrawn at any time, such as when I can no longer feasibly take on any more weddings due to work capacity. In the event that your wedding date later this year needs to be postponed due to the ongoing pandemic, we will work with you to move your booking to a new date where possible.

Click through to read more about wedding photography and pricing, and here’s to a successful second half of 2020 and into 2021 - looking forward to hearing from you! In the mean time, stay safe!

Your Wedding Photography and the Coronavirus COVID-19 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/3/your-wedding-photography-and-the-coronavirus-covid-19

There is no doubt that COVID-19 will affect the wedding industry - the only question is how significantly. Bridelux Atelier and London Bridal Fashion Week have both been postponed due to the outbreak. More events are expected to be impacted in a similar way and weddings that have been planned for many months and even years, may face cancellation or postponement.

The World Health Organisation has deemed the outbreak of COVID-19 to be a pandemic and the closing of numerous borders has put an end to destination weddings and guests travelling to attend events. The UK Government is advising strongly against large gatherings and non-essential travel, putting many weddings over the next few months in jeopardy.

With a constantly evolving situation, and daily and changing advice from official channels, should you have any concerns about your wedding photography, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will discuss everything personally.

Rest assured that within current conditions, we have no intentions to cancel any wedding bookings, and we plan to fulfil all wedding photography contracts, subject to official advice and bans.

For up-to-date news and advice, please refer to the excellent and constantly updated Guides for Brides article, by clicking here.

Once again, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Should the situation change here at Jeff Sham Photography, we will be in touch with each of our couples personally.

Notification of Termination of Amore Mobile App Service https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/3/notification-of-termination-of-amore-mobile-app-service Unfortunately we must announce that the Amore mobile app service will terminate with effect from March 29th, 2020. From this date, existing apps may cease to function correctly and maintenance and support will end. Further no new apps will be available, and this will affect the small number of couples who are expecting an Amore mobile app in their wedding photography package - this will be discussed with the couple on a case-by-case basis.

The decision to terminate the service was a difficult one, but it was based on increased licensing and maintenance costs, largely due to a weaker sterling exchange rate in light of recent changes in the political and economical landscape. Usage analysis revealed that the Amore mobile app had a very low activity rate among clients, with app-opens regularly in low single digits per month among all published apps, and thus was considered no longer a viable option for the business going forward.

The Amore mobile app was introduced by Jeff Sham Photography a number of years ago with the intent of providing couples with a unique and innovative digital keepsake of their photography on their mobile device. We hope that users have enjoyed the experience over the years. As an alternative, clients will be able to use and continue to use the Photo Moments app to view all of their images - this is available via the app store for your mobile device and a unique link will be provided for download when images become available online to view. Previous clients who would like a reminder of their unique link to access and download the Photo Moments app, please do get in touch.

Rest assured that we will continue to provide a quality range of options to couples to supplement their wedding photography, including a luxury range of wedding albums that continue to be popular in the digital age.

The animated Amore slideshow is not affected by this announcement and remains popular for clients to digitally showcase their photography.

Should you have any questions related to this announcement, please do get in touch.

Wedding Photography Industry Survey Results 2019-2020 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/2/wedding-photography-industry-survey-results-2019-2020 Each yeah Your Perfect Wedding Photographer conducts a wedding photography industry survey for statistical analysis. Over 300 professional (full time) wedding photographers took part for the latest survey, revealing some interesting points to note.

  • The average number of weddings captured year is 28
  • The average spend on photography is £1590
  • Just 4% of a professional photographer's time is spent taking photos
  • Instagram has become the top social media platform for bookings
  • The average number of enquiries received per year is 110

To see all of the results, click here.

This is not too dissimilar to my own experience as a professional wedding photographer. I would love to see my time spent photographing to be more than just 4% but let's not forget that this is a full time career with admin and marketing and continual training. Not to mention post-processing, which takes-up 55% of a photographer's time.

I'm also a little surprised that Instagram has become the social media platform of choice for the majority of couples booking their photographer.

Guides for Brides - The 2019 Wedding Report https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2020/1/guides-for-brides-the-2019-wedding-report The popular wedding directory Guides for Brides, has published the results of their study based on 10 000 couples using their cross-platform services to plan their wedding in 2019. It revealed that the national average cost of getting married in 2019 is £17 500 (compared with £16 500 in 2018), with the most typical wedding spend being £13 000 or less, an increase from £12 000 in 2018.

Other interesting results from the study:

  • An estimated 42% of couples have a budget of less than £10 000.
  • Contrary to popular belief that getting married abroad is cheaper, the study shows that couples spend an average of £16 000 for an overseas wedding.
  • Photography spend was up from £1100 in 2018, to £1200.
  • July took over from August as the most popular month to get married, with 20th and 27th July having more weddings than any other dates.
  • 40.7% of weddings occurred in the summer months, with just 10.2% in the winter.
  • 50.1% of couples married on a Saturday, with Friday being a not-even-close second at 16.6%.

Year 2019 In Numbers https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/12/year-2019-in-numbers Rachel and FredRachel and FredMandolay Hotel, Guildford

I thought it might be fun and interesting to summarise my wedding year of 2019 in numbers and stats...

Number of weddings photographed: 20

This is right around my average of 21 weddings that I photograph a year, with this year's weddings notably concentrated heavily around the Spring and Summer times, with a few in Autumn, and none in the Winter.

Number of counties covered: 8

This breaks down to Surrey - 8, London - 4, Berkshire - 3, Bedfordshire - 1, Hertfordshire - 1, Somerset - 1, Sussex - 1, Buckinghamshire - 1. Although primarily a Surrey wedding photographer, I've travelled for weddings over the years, such as to Shropshire and Devon; this year, the furthest I travelled was to Wells, Somerset.

Average score from feedback: 10 (out of 10)

I offer all of my couples an opportunity to have their say about me after the wedding in order to help me to improve in future, as well as scoring me over a number of categories plus an overall score. Over half of my couples this year went on to give me valuable feedback and to achieve a perfect score goes to show the amount of work and dedication I put into each and every wedding that I cover.

Number of weddings from referrals: 4

Word of mouth is very important, and is a great sign of trust, and I take it to mean that I've done a great job for my previous couples who then go on to recommend me to their friends and family. So in 2019, 20% of my weddings were from recommendations - and with it still being early for 2020, a whopping 80% of confirmed bookings are from referrals!

Number of weddings from Google: 9

For those couples that told me how they originally found me, it appears that Google is still the predominant way for couples to find their suppliers, with half of those who responded, telling me that their favourite search engine was used to find me.

Number of weddings from social media: 1

It appears that I need to up my social media profile for next year. Just one couple went on to book me this year having originally found me on Facebook.

Wedding lead time of less than a year: 17

It seems that couples are booking suppliers much less in advance than they used to. In the past, I was regularly taking bookings well over a year in advance, but now, a great percentage of my couples book me less than a year before their wedding date. With this in mind, with so many couples leaving it late to book their photographer, it might be worth considering getting in their first to secure your first choice photographer! When I got married just a few years ago, we booked our photographer with over 18 months to go.

Average spend of couples: £1146

My couples spent on average £1146 on their wedding photography, including wedding albums and any other products - this is up very slightly from last year's figure of £1061. Comparing with the national average of £1560, I remain firmly in the affordable mid-range bracket for most couples.

Law Commission review of UK marriage laws https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/11/law-commission-review-of-uk-marriage-laws The Law Commission are undertaking a two-year project to review the current marriage laws in England and Wales, to make them more relevant to today’s couples. “The current laws date from 1836 and aren’t meeting the needs of many modern couples,” says Professor Nicholas Hopkins, who released the proposed plan earlier this year. “A reformed weddings law will allow for greater choice within a simple, fair, and consistent legal structure.”

Guides for Brides gives a breakdown of how UK marriage laws could change. Read more...

What do couples want to buy? https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/11/what-do-couples-want-to-buy The Professional Photographers of America commissioned in-depth research to understand consumer behaviour, and to explore the products element across multiple genres of photography. It appears that wedding albums are still top of the list of products that wedding couples are looking for. On products that were actually purchased, 58% of couples went on to purchase an album, and 43% of couples went on to purchase prints.

We offer a range of top quality professional wedding albums, as well as digital files as standard. Professional prints, desk and wall products are also available. Would greetings cards or thank you cards be something you'd be interested in?

What Wedding Photographers Really Get Up To https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/9/what-wedding-photographers-really-get-up-to An interesting article was published by Your Perfect Wedding Photographer recently, detailing what exactly is involved with wedding photography, aiming in part to set-straight the misconceptions that is it both expensive and that it’s “just taking photos”, and to answer why some couples are left disappointed with their wedding photography; it raises awareness to those that think it’s easy.

As a full-time wedding photographer myself, I found it to be a fascinating read and I have no doubt many couples would learn a few things by reading the article for themselves - it’s a great educational piece.

“Once the photos are taken the work doesn’t stop there. A photographer will take hundreds if not into the thousands of photos, these all need going through and cutting, then they need editing to ensure they look the best they can.”

So what do wedding photographers really get up to? The following infographic goes a long way to answer this question.

And don’t underestimate the cost of skill and knowledge - I personally have spent literally thousands of pounds on initial and continual wedding photography development and training so that I am confident and competent when photographing your once-in-a-lifetime special day.

And finally...

”Taking photos is easy, taking beautiful photos that tell a beautiful story is the tricky part, it isn’t easy, but it is easier when you have years of experience which helps you know how to capture those once in a lifetime moments through photography and create that beautiful story of that single day where you marry your partner you shall spend your rest of your life with.”

The National Wedding Survey 2019 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/9/the-national-wedding-survey-2019 Hitched and You & Your Wedding have just published the results of their national wedding survey, asking 2800 couples all about their wedding planning journey, and some of the stats are quite surprising.

The average total cost of a wedding in 2019 remained fairly steady from last year, at just under £32000. The top five spend categories were

  1. the wedding venue
  2. the honeymoon
  3. food
  4. the engagement ring
  5. drink

With drink at the number five spot with an average spend at around £1600, personally, I’m a bit surprised that on average couples are spending more on drink than their wedding photography!

There’s a lot of interesting information from the survey, such as the preferred venue type, the average number of guests, length of engagement, wedding dress costs, honeymoon destinations, and more - of course, Brexit gets a mention! You can read about all of the results and see how your own wedding compares, here.

They got married on a lovely Spring day at St Mary’s Church in Shalford, just outside Guildford. Their wedding reception was held at the four star luxury hotel that is Barnett Hill, set in 26 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and woodland. I hope you can see from the photos below what a joyous and happy occasion it was - a quintessential Surrey wedding.

Nonsuch Mansion Wedding Photography - Katie and Neil - Surrey Wedding Photographer https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/7/nonsuch-mansion-wedding-photography-katie-and-neil-surrey-wedding-photographer Nonsuch Mansion is a Georgian gem set in stunning manicured gardens on the East side of Nonsuch Park in Sutton, Surrey. The unusual name is derived from the old English language...

nonsuch place to rival its beauty and magnificence” - as described by Henry VIII

I recently had the honour to share Katie and Neil’s wedding day at this magnificent venue. It was a lovely sunny day enjoyed by all against the amazing backdrop of the historic mansion house, and we also had a chance to explore the lovely gardens for some amazing photos for the couple.

Take a look through Katie and Neil’s wedding day memories below.

Wedding Tips and Ideas https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/7/wedding-tips-and-ideas I’ve been super busy so far this year, and I have been spending a lot of time photographing weddings all over the country, and spending even more time in my digital lab afterwards, post processing everything. I did however come across this really useful website, Wedding Wire, which I think my couples will enjoy. It promises “the best tips and ideas at your fingertips to make wedding planning as enjoyable as possible”. Click to see their wedding ideas section.

Manor of Groves Wedding Photography - Hertfordshire Wedding Photographer - Lizzie and Laurence https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/3/manor-of-groves-wedding-photography-hertfordshire-wedding-photographer-lizzie-laurence A look back at Lizzie and Laurence's beautiful wedding day at the picturesque Manor of Groves hotel set in the idyllic Hertfordshire countryside... I first met Lizzie when she was a bridesmaid at her auntie's wedding, and since then I've met the couple occasionally for family photoshoots and the like. So for me, their wedding had a nice personal touch, and I was honoured to be invited back to photograph their big day, and to see some familiar faces again.

The True Cost of Weddings in the UK https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/2/the-true-cost-of-weddings-in-the-uk In the most extensive report to date, Guides for Brides revealed new figures from over 18,000 couples getting married during 2017 and 2018. Although some couples are spending a very significant amount on getting married, with plenty of budgets over £100,000, the more typical cost of a wedding in the UK is under £12,000.

These finding are significant as previous media reports have put the cost of a wedding at £32,000, leading couples to believe that a beautiful wedding is out of their financial reach. In a recent poll, 83% said that the cost of weddings puts people off getting married.

It's not that couples are spending any less, it's simply that previous reports centred around London and included some unusually high budget weddings that significantly raised the average cost.

Key photography points:

  • Top three wedding expenses: venue - £6000, bridal wear - £1200, photography - £1100
  • Percentage spent on suppliers: photography/videography - 9.4% (compared to entertainment - 14.4%, flowers/decor - 6.9%)

Read the full report here.

How to Tie a Wedding Cravat https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/2/how-to-tie-a-wedding-cravat A very common question I get asked on a morning of a wedding, is whether I know how to tie a wedding cravat. The short answer is, it is just the same as a regular tie, but with a much more ruffled knot, with a wider and fatter "short stem" on the outside. I've put together a quick guide right here for you, so if you're reading on the morning of your wedding (congratulations!), and want to dive straight-in, here you go:

For a step-by-step guide in pictures, I've attached an image from Moss Bros, and you can refer to the original article here.

5 Reasons Why You Should Invest in a Wedding Album https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/2/5-reasons-why-you-should-invest-in-a-wedding-album Why You Should Get a Wedding Album

You may not have thought about a wedding album when setting your wedding budget however here are five reasons why you should try and find a little extra so you can have an album created for you.

1. Something physical

Once your wedding is over you just want to see your photos so you can relive it all again, however having a physical book to look through is a lot different to scrolling through your photos on your phone, tablet or computer. You’ll get your images via a USB drive as standard, plus a gallery you can login and view them online. However you are staring at a screen! Unplug and view your photos in a physical book.

Kindles have been around for many years now, however people still buy physical books. Photos on a USB drive will be kept in a drawer and are easily forgotten about.

However there is something about the high quality feel, touch and even smell of a freshly printed album. An album and book that is unique to you, something that you will treasure. Something that allows you to sit down with your partner, and go through page by page.

We use one of the biggest and best labs in the UK for their quality printing services that produce gorgeous albums, with high quality paper and beautifully bound. Album covers could be leather, cloth, or even aluminium or acrylic, there are lots of options and you create something unique that suits you.

2. A great way to show family and friends

When you see friends and family there is something nice about showing them a physical album, a book that they can go through showing your beautiful photos. Lay flat albums are great for placing on a table allowing more than a couple of people to see your photos as you go through them.

Instead of sending friends a link to view your photos online, invite them round and relive the day together.

3. A beautiful story

A wedding album is a story book of your day, unique to you, a story from getting ready, the moment you put on that dress dress, arriving in the car, walking down the aisle, the smile on your partners face, the tear in your mum’s eye, the celebration, the joy and happiness on guests faces. This book is all about your day and your photos will tell a beautiful story that will help you relive the day.

We have experience of creating unique albums, and know the best way to layout and structure the album. We will pick and photos that work well with each other, they will create an album that will tell the story of your day. Just leave it to us, or you can have as much control of the design as you wish, by selecting your favourite images for inclusion. The design goes to print, only when you are happy with it.

The excitement of seeing your album for the first time and going through it will leave you in tears. Tears of joy and happiness as you see your photos for the first time and relive your day.

4. Something to treasure

A wedding album is something that you will treasure forever, this book will hold all of your memories of one of the happiest days of your life. You will keep it safe, you will show it to family, and you will every so often reach for it to relive your special day.

When you have kids and want to show them Mum and Dad getting married, then you will reach for the wedding album. This book is a story and something you will certainly treasure. Unlike a USB hidden away in a drawer, you will keep this book within easy reach.

Your album is something that will last the ages, that your children, and their children, can look back on. Print is timeless - do we even remember what floppy discs and CDs are, and what will become of the USB drive?

5. Gifts and memories for parents and friends

Having an album printed for your proud parents makes a great gift and also for them to treasure and relive the day. You could have a smaller album created and printed that you can give to parents, bridesmaids and family while having a larger album created and kept just for you.

What about cost?

Wedding albums have lots of options, the more pages the greater the cost, a leather bound album will be more expensive than a synthetic or cloth cover, and a large album will be more than a smaller mini-album. Costs for a wedding album can be between £150 to £500+ depending on what you want and the photographer.

Remember you are paying for the time to design (with revisions), create and produce the album for you, and also for a high quality album itself, that won’t be your typical book that you can buy online from one of the many consumer photo printing services.

We have samples available to view on request, as well as all of the options that you can see and touch. Click here to view our range of wedding albums.

What if I did it myself?

Of course you could do this yourself, however it is making time to sit down and do this, finding a high quality lab and printer, downloading and learning to use their album platform software to create the album layouts and then picking and arranging the photos. And you’ll find often the layout templates are for styled for fun family lifestyle books, and are far from ideal for a timeless wedding album!

It is easy to start and then say “I’ll come back to it”. There is certainly something nice about getting the album and the surprise and excitement of seeing your wedding day in photos, in a wedding album. Doing it yourself may be cheaper, however you may not end up doing it at all.

What is a lay flat wedding album?

The term lay flat means exactly that, it means that when your wedding album is open, the book lays flat, there is no bending or lifting where the pages are bound, with a seamless central spine. This is great for large photos that go across the page, and also allows you to see the full photo. We have lay flat albums (eg the Milano, the Syracuse), and also more traditional albums with a visual centre break (eg the Roma).

Remember, your wedding photos are your memories, a story of your day, you have hired a professional wedding photographer to capture your day, why not let the professionals create a beautiful album for you too.

International Recognition for Local Photographer https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/2/international-recognition-for-local-photographer PRESS RELEASE

Local photographer Jeff Sham has gained international recognition by winning a significant award with the Guild of Photographers.

The Guild is the highly regarded national photographic body whose members are dedicated to enhancing their skills in the art, craft and profession of photography.

It runs an Image of the Month Competition, and received around 13,000 entries during 2018, from photographers in the UK and overseas!

Each image is scored, and the scores from the year are then totalled to determine who wins one of the Guild's Top 10 Photographer awards. This is clearly a very demanding year long process!

Jeff was honoured to become an International Top 10 Photographer of the Year in the Wedding Category - a remarkable achievement when one considers the number and  standard of the entries. Their Award was announced at the Guild's Awards night at Crewe Hall (a stunning Jacobean mansion in Cheshire), earlier this week.

Lesley Thirsk (Director of the Guild) said she is “both proud and delighted that Jeff has achieved this recognition after 12 months of submitting the highest quality images. The Guild has very demanding standards when judging photographic competitions. The judging is undertaken by a panel of internationally recognised experts from a variety of photographic backgrounds, so Jeff quite rightly should be delighted with their extraordinary achievement.”

Jeff said, “having not been able to attend the Awards night, I was initially unaware of my award, and when I learned of it, I was absolutely thrilled with the news! I had been working very hard on my craft last year, and I am so proud to have been named in the International Top 10 Wedding Photographers by The Guild. It’s an amazing recognition, and I wish to thank The Guild, and also all of my lovely couples as I could not have done this without them.”

Members of the Guild are committed to achieving the highest standards of professionalism and to a journey of continuing professional development.

You can find out more about the Guild of Photographers at its website www.photoguild.co.uk, and more about Jeff at their website www.jeffsham.co.uk.

Competition Year In Review 2018 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/2/competition-year-in-review-2018 Road to The Photographers Bar

My goal in 2018 was to consistently produce high quality work for my couples and with it, achieve membership to the coveted and exclusive Photographers Bar. You can read more about this in my blog, but membership to the Bar is awarded only to those photographers who have had their images assessed over the competition year and have attained a high enough score that evidences an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency - it is a distinction that is very difficult to achieve.

If you have been following my blog or my social media, you will have seen that I have achieved my goal and I was granted lifetime membership to the Photographers Bar, an honour that I am very proud of, which also affirms my commitment to my craft and to my couples.

I thought I would showcase my images that were submitted for assessment over the year, so that you can see for yourself the type of work that I consistently produce for my couples. Images are assessed by very experienced judges in accordance with national competition judging criteria and are graded and scored accordingly. I hope you enjoy my showcase of work which has resulted in my new distinction.

Last Award for the Competition Year https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2019/1/last-award-for-the-competition-year The photography competition for the year 2018 has drawn to a close, and I’m especially delighted and pleased to announce one final award for my wedding photography in the last competition month. As the competition year concludes, in achieving this award for October, I have also reached my goal of membership to The Guild of Photographers’ Photographers Bar. You can read about this in another blog post, but in summary, being granted membership to the Photographers Bar requires a strong competition year in order to amass the requisite number of points - it is a very difficult achievement which requires consistently high quality work in the photographer’s chosen field.

So please find my last awarded image for 2018, of which I have particular pleasure and delight in presenting.

Local Photographer Achieves National Acclaim https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/12/local-photographer-achieves-national-acclaim PRESS RELEASE

Local photographer Jeff Sham has been granted membership of the 'Photographers Bar'.

Membership of the 'Photographers Bar' is a unique distinction awarded to those photographers who have successfully had images assessed by the Guild of Photographers over the course of a year and have attained a score that evidences an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency throughout a full year.

The Guild of Photographers is a highly respected association for all photographers and its competition attracts up to 1500 images for judging by an expert Panel of Judges each month. Points are given to entries and these are then totalled at the end of the year. Those who reach the required threshold are then awarded membership of the 'Photographers Bar'.

Membership of the 'Photographers Bar' is a distinction that is very difficult to achieve - in fact less than 200 photographers have achieved it in the 5 years since its inception, during which time over 60,000 images have been entered for assessment by photographers across the UK and from overseas.

Guild Director Lesley Thirsk said, "I am delighted for Jeff as this is a great achievement! Submitting and having images assessed every month for a year and reaching the required standards to become a member of the Photographers Bar is very demanding. It illustrates his commitment, skill and consistency. Jeff should be very proud of what he has achieved.”

On hearing the news Jeff said, “At the very beginning of the year, I set out with the goal of achieving membership of the Photographers Bar. Having periodically submitted work to the Guild in the past, I decided that this year I would commit to achieving the distinction, not only as a professional accolade but also as a personal achievement - amassing the required amount of points required a huge amount of dedication and hard work throughout the year and I’m really proud that it has all paid off, in what has been a very competitive competition year. Not only have I demonstrated to myself that I can produce a consistent level of quality and award winning work, I hope that this shows my couples that I am dedicated and committed to producing only the very best wedding photography for them.”

You can find out more about this award and the Guild of Photographers at their website www.photoguild.co.uk and more about Jeff at his website www.jeffsham.co.uk.

Cain Manor Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photographer - Liz and Steve https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/11/cain-manor-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photographer-liz-and-steve Back in August, I had the honour of photographing Liz and Steve's wedding held at Cain Manor, a beautiful barn-style country house wedding venue on the Surrey and Hampshire border. Set amongst private woodland, the house and estate provided a perfect backdrop to the wedding, with romantic countryside charm and rustic style.

See how Liz and Steve celebrated their wedding day below.

Wedding Awards for September https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/11/wedding-awards-for-september Pleased to announce two more wedding photography awards for the month of September. A special thanks to Anna and Iggy for allowing me to be part of their celebrations in Colchester, Essex - they originally contacted me all the way from Australia!

Now I'm just one more award away for inclusion in the coveted and exclusive Guild Photographer's Bar, with only one competition month remaining this year. Becoming a member of the Photographer's Bar is a unique distinction awarded to those photographers who have successfully had images assessed over the course of a year, evidencing an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency - a distinction that is very difficult to achieve!

If you're still looking for an award winning wedding photographer, just get in touch to discuss!

Some Recent Testimonials https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/9/some-recent-testimonials I've not had the time to create any testimonial cards over the summer, what with my busy wedding work schedule, so now that the season is drawing to a close, I thought I would spend some time creating some report cards and letting you guys see what previous couples have had to say about me and how they scored me on my service and wedding photography. Take a look!

New Look https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/8/new-look I have recently started to update the look and feel of my website and brand as a whole. You may have noticed subtle changes across my website and social media. The transition may take some time so do not be alarmed if you still see my old orange-themed branding - everything will be beautifully pastel purple soon!

Oaks Farm Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photograper - Sally and Richard https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/7/oaks-farm-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photograper-sally-and-richard Here are some photos from Sally and Richard’s recent wedding at the rustic and tranquil Oaks Farm in Shirley, just a short distance from the metropolitan boroughs of Croydon and Bromley. We had pretty rainy conditions all day long, but absolutely made the most of it, and everyone had a lovely time.

Afterwards, having delivered Sally her beautiful wedding album, she left me some amazing feedback:

Thank you so much again Jeff for everything you did for us. You really were so lovely and made us feel at ease both before, and during, our wedding... You had a smile on your face throughout the day and we had so many compliments from our guests on how great you were. You made sure all of the photos we requested were taken, despite a few things getting in the way, including the rainy weather. We are so happy with the amazing photos you took and cannot thank you enough! Would highly recommend you!

I hope you can get a feel for their fabulous day from the photos that follow.

Family Photoshoots Available https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/7/family-photoshoots-available I've had some demand recently from previous couples about studio and/or lifestyle photoshoots with their families, at home or on location. In response, I've invested in some quality studio lights and umbrellas and softboxes, and am now able to meet that demand. If you fancy creating some memories with your loved ones, you can read more here and just give me a shout if you want to discuss your requirements.

Website Moving To Secure HTTPS https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/6/website-moving-to-secure-https We will start to transition our website from HTTP to HTTPS in July 2018. This update will include providing and setting up new security certificates and will coincide with Google’s announcement that with their July Chrome browser release, sites not migrated to HTTPS will have a ‘not secure’ message. Currently, according to Built With, only 0.3% of all internet sites have the new certificates (as of June 2018), so Google is pushing harder to drive compliance.

What is HTTPS?

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is an internet communication protocol that protects the integrity and confidentiality of data between the user's computer and the site they are visiting. Adopting HTTPS basically protects a user’s connection to your website because the data sent using HTTPS is secured via Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS), which provides three key layers of protection:

  • Encryption - encrypting the exchanged data to keep it secure from eavesdroppers. So, while the user is browsing a website, nobody can "listen" to their conversations, track their activities across multiple pages, or steal their information.
  • Data integrity - data cannot be modified or corrupted during transfer, intentionally or otherwise, without being detected.
  • Authentication - proves that your users communicate with the intended website. It protects against man-in-the-middle attacks.

Is it safe for clients to be shopping on our website?

Yes, the HTTPS update will cover all webpages but the shopping experience is already HTTPS enabled. Our shopping experience is a completely safe and secure - we protect client information using the latest e-commerce privacy technologies. In fact, you’ll notice when moving from cart to checkout, the URL changes to an HTTPS address.

Before the update is complete, clients may receive "site not secure" warnings when they try to log into their galleries - this will be resolved on completion of the update.

We Are Changing Our Look https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/6/we-are-changing-our-look Rebranding

Becky & PhilBecky & PhilThree Rivers Golf and Country Club, Essex

You may have noticed that the watermarks and branding across the site has been looking a little different. Changes are afoot to establish a simpler and modern design to match what you expect from a leading UK wedding photography brand.

Inspiration

When Jeff Sham Photography was launched, a simple corporate logo was created using a a combination of both a serif typeface font that was elegant yet legible plus a playful handwriting font in a bold orange colour to highlight a creative flair. This laid the foundation and backbone for the brand, and it was what the business was originally built upon.

Today, nearly a decade later, as our photographic style evolves, we wanted to create a timeless, empathetic and expressive feel to the brand going forward that encompasses what our couples demand - simple, beautiful and natural photography.

The old corporate logo was beginning to feel a little dated, and a refresh was required to better fit into the modern age.

Sally and RichardSally and RichardOaks Farm, Shirley

Autograph

Instead of coming-up with a fancy logo or some other generic image that represents a camera, we wanted something to adorn your images and represent the brand that is a little more special.

When an artist finishes a piece of work, they always sign it - a unique and timeless way of identifying the craftsman. Every image we create and deliver, we are proud of, and we want to put our signature to it. So what better way than to create a sleek and elegant autograph, uniquely hand-drawn. In this way, we can happily stamp our name to our images, to sign them and be proud of them.

You will see this new autograph appear throughout our branding and documents, and will serve as our new visual identity.

Colour

The autograph will be in black or white only, elegant and unobtrusive. We want our work to stand-out, so have reduced the colour and noise that you see. The original bright orange highlights have gone, replaced by beautiful subtle tones that is more in-line with the natural feel of our work.

Looking ahead

We hope you love the new modern look. The transition may take some time, but ultimately, we hope you will find an elegant new modern feel about our brand, more consistent with our core values of simple, beautiful and natural photography.

Wedding Photography February Awards https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/4/wedding-photography-february-awards Announcing a clean sweep of awards this month - three entries resulting in three national Bronze Bars. A nod to consistency, and I am happily on track to achieve membership to the coveted Photographers' Bar in the weddings category, which is what I am aiming for this year - membership requires consistent scoring of awards across at least 24 images in a competition year. Fingers crossed! A special thanks to my brides and grooms - definitely can't do it without you all!

New Awards For 2018 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2018/3/new-awards-for-2018 I like to start the year by entering my images into the Guild of Photographers' competitions to see if my work is still up there in terms of quality and standard. I regularly reach a Bronze Bar level with my images, signifying a strong standard at a national competition level and something to be proud of - roughly speaking this will be of a level that's above the average of what you would expect from a professional photographer. I'm pleased to say that this year, my consistency shows, and I have achieved two more award winning images to add to my collection. Still chasing the elusive Silver Bar, but we all must have something to aspire to!

Wedding Etiquette - how to wear a buttonhole or corsage https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/11/wedding-etiquette---how-to-wear-a-buttonhole-or-corsage This topic is probably the most widely misunderstood or confused from all the weddings that I’ve covered. From my experience, a lot of couples and their bridal parties often are not aware of the traditional wedding etiquette in wearing a buttonhole (for groomsmen) or a corsage (typically for the mothers of bride and groom).

What I have learned is that, traditionally:

  • men should wear their buttonhole with a pin on the outside of the lapel on the left chest, just above the heart.
  • to pin the buttonhole: push the pin through and into the outside of the lapel and back out again to "grab" a little bit of material, in a 45 degree downward angle, pointing left to right (this also ensures that any little jewel on the pin is visible against the jacket), pierce the stem to fix the buttonhole in place, and then finally back through the lapel, so the sharp point is safely tucked behind the lapel.
  • I've seen all sorts of fancy clipping mechanisms such a clipping "safety pins" and magnets, which eventually snag and drop and droop - but really, the most secure and simplest way is the traditional pin.
  • do not make the mistake of wearing your buttonhole by pushing the stem through the actual button hole of the jacket at near neck height - this is a very common misconception!
  • corsages for the ladies are traditionally worn differently, and are typically for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom (and grandmothers). If you have a chest-worn corsage, use a pin and affix to the chest on the right side, and upside down - stem upwards, flower pointing downwards.
  • for wrist-worn corsages, these are traditionally worn on the non-dominant arm, so most women will wear this on their left arm - if the majority of the bridal party is right-handed, the left-handed ladies will usually wear it on their left hand to match.

Of course there are always variations to these traditions. For example, if men have military medals, these go on the left chest and the buttonhole would then be worn on the right; I've also been to a lot of weddings where the corsage was worn by the ladies the "right way up" - as long as everyone matches, I guess it doesn't matter too much!

At the end of the day though, it's your wedding, and you should do as you please - treat this as a general guide.

Please Don't Make This Mistake https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/10/please-dont-make-this-mistake I got an email from a gentleman who got married earlier this year. He made the mistake of not using a professional wedding photographer for his special day, which was a decision that, by his admittance, he now regrets. It was the same reason that I've heard time and time again - "we had a family member take a lot of pictures" - of which I've never heard of a positive outcome!

The purpose of his message was to see if I could post-process his "stack of pictures from many different sources" to see if we can "salvage something" out of them. Having got some sample images from him to see the scope of work involved, I was shocked to see the multiple sources were actually camera phones, budget and mid-range DSLRs with economy lenses! Even just one of my lenses alone probably costs the same as the total of the kit used. I was really disappointed for him. Sure, you can get some great images no matter the equipment used, but the composition, posing and lighting in these images were less than flattering, to be kind. Some of the images were not even in focus!

This is a story that is becoming more prevalent - as camera prices fall, more and more people have access to better kit, which was previously too costly. However, please ask yourself whether having a decent camera is enough to entrust someone to photograph your wedding day - that once in a lifetime moment.

Don't make this mistake.

One More National Award Winning Image - It's Not Easy https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/5/one-more-national-award-winning-image-its-not-easy No competitions since the start of the year, so I entered last month, with what I thought was a good chance of a getting a solid high award and possibly even a Silver. Funnily enough, the image that I thought would score well was not awarded at national competition level - it just goes to show how tough these competitions are! Here is the image from Claire and Jan's wedding at Grims Dyke Hotel that I thought had a very good chance of doing well - it remains one of my favourite bridal images. It was classified, meaning "images of a standard worthy of acknowledgement relevant to the genre entered but which are not deemed award winning at national competition level".

Claire and JanClaire and JanGrims Dyke Hotel, Harrow

Happily though, another image that I knew would do well, I think due in large part due to the couple's beautiful expressions, scored me an award at national Bronze level, "images of a strong standard at a national competition level (something to be proud of)". You can feel the love in this image. Thank you to Claire and Jan for being so amazing to photograph!

The Real Cost of Wedding Photography https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/5/the-real-cost-of-wedding-photography A new article has been published by Your Perfect Wedding Photographer where they looked at the cost of wedding photography, detailing a survey of 2016. The article also includes tips on how much to budgeting and pricing, money saving tips, as well as breaking down the real cost of wedding photography.

Interesting points to note on wedding photography pricing:

  • Average cost of wedding photography in the UK in 2016 is £1450
  • There was a very slight drop from 2015, where the figure was £1520
  • London is the most expensive where the average cost is £2000
  • The South West and South East came second and third
  • The East Midlands came in cheapest with an average of £1240

Morden Hall Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photographer - Emily and Grant https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/morden-hall-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photographer-emily-and-grant Last year I photographed Emily and Grant's wedding at then newly renovated Morden Hall. I believe it was one of the first weddings to be held there since they reopened. It's such a beautiful venue, set within 125 acres of National Trust parkland, with lovely gardens and a stylish interior spaces. It was a shame that we had a rainy day and didn't get to make the absolute most of what the 18th Century country house had to offer, but everyone still had a brilliant day, as I hope you can see from the photos below.

Happy Sunday https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/happy-sunday I met with one of my couples today for a coffee and to hand over their wedding album. They told me that they were delighted with their images and they looked positively ecstatic with their album too. As we were sipping our coffees and carefully thumbing through the pages, a lady who was sat at an adjacent table got up to leave, and as she was putting her jacket on, she took the time to lean over to us and complimented me on my photography, having seen some of my work across the tables. It's always nice to receive such nice comments from strangers!

Of course my main concern to to make my couples happy, and I'm pretty sure Frances and Rich were very happy indeed. They scored me 10/10 in every category on their feedback form! Many congratulations again to you both, and I hope you have an amazing belated honeymoon.

More Awards for 2017 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/3/more-awards-for-2017 After a break of over two years from competing, I thought I would start 2017 by submitting some of my images for competition, to see if my work still compares well against the very best of my peers on a national level. I'm pleased to say that all three of my entries were each awarded a Bronze Bar, signifying a strong standard at national competition level which is difficult to achieve and is something to be proud of. So here I present to you my very latest award-winning images; thank you to all my lovely brides and grooms for making this possible!

Welcome to 2017 https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2017/2/welcome-to-2017 So we're not far into 2017 and I've received a couple of feedback testimonials from two weddings over Christmas. Interestingly, they both point to elements of professional wedding photography that are often overlooked.

Siobhan and Callum, who were married in Kent with their wedding reception held at the lovely Village Hotel in Maidstone, highlighted the importance of support, care and planning provided by a professional photographer. They scored me 10/10 in every category of performance and they stated that:

"[Jeff] was extremely supportive and dedicated time to making sure we were able to have what we wanted. If there was one thing that I was sure of and didn't have to worry about, it was the photography! Jeff was professional, supportive, kind and 100% put us at ease. The photographs are beautiful and a true testament to Jeff's craft. We thoroughly enjoyed planning with Jeff and having him as part of our big day. He captured every smile and every tear and provided us with stunning pictures to immortalise our memories."

Siobhan and CallumSiobhan and CallumSt Alban’s Church, Chatham; Village Hotel, Maidstone

Lizzie and Lloyd, who got married at Cooling Castle Barn in Kent, touched on trust and confidence in their wedding photographer. Again, scoring me 10/10 in every performance category, they added:

"...you made us feel confident and trusting in your services. Personally I find it hard to trust people, but from the very beginning you made us feel like we could completely trust you and your abilities! I knew you would do a fantastic job and you completely surpassed our expectations. Thank you!"

It just goes to show that there is so much more to professional wedding photography than producing great photos that couples love. Trust, confidence and support in planning the biggest day in most people's lives is often just as important.

Gorse Hill Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photographer - Louise and Mike https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2016/11/gorse-hill-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photographer-louise-and-mike I had the pleasure of photographing Louise and Mike's wedding last summer at the elegant Surrey country mansion that is the De Vere Venue, Gorse Hill. I myself got married at a (then) De Vere Venue in Highfield Park, so I was looking forward to this day - their venues are all so charming and full of character. Gorse Hill provided a wonderful setting for this couple's wedding celebrations and served as a beautiful scenic backdrop to their wedding photography too. Here are some images from their day.

Think wedding photography is easy? Think again! https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2016/8/think-wedding-photography-is-easy-think-again I've had a very busy summer with weddings and I've not had much time to update my website or post to my blog, so apologies! My work load won't be slowing down until deep into the Autumn. In the mean time, do check out and like my Facebook page for more regular and quick updates.

I came across this article the other day from Your Perfect Wedding Photographer, that I thought was worth sharing as it's very informative and holds very true. What was particularly interesting is that couples in the UK are spending on average £1520 on their wedding photography, a figure that has held over the past few years.

Take a look through the infographic for some fantastic insight into what goes into professional wedding photography.

It was a bit of a rainy day, but that didn't dampen spirits! I've since moved into the area and this is now one of my local venues - can't wait to get back there for more wedding fun!

Coulsdon Manor Wedding Photography - Surrey Wedding Photographer - Megan and Marc https://www.jeffsham.co.uk/blog/2016/2/coulsdon-manor-wedding-photography-surrey-wedding-photographer-megan-and-marc Here's a wedding from last summer, held at the fabulous Coulsdon Manor, a venue that I've photographed at a few times now, and always a pleasure. I particularly loved the pastel dresses and the vintage feel of this wedding. I can't wait to be back there again!

Jewellery from H Samuel, suits from Debenhams, hair by Fusion (Coulsdon).
